my own private point // my own private break (2019)

Synchronized 2 channel video loop, 1:56:17

my own private point // my own private break is a double-layer, synchronized, full-length, chromakeyed “mashup” of Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break (1991) and Gus van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho (1991). It functions as both an exploration of and a commentary on mediated homoerotic masculinity of the early 1990s. The intentional intertwining of these two films comes about their shared release date (1991) and the mutual presence of Keanu Reeves in each film. Reeves occupies two very different versions of homoerotic masculinity in these two very different films: however, via this act of layering and recuperation of meaning, surprising affinities are consistently found.

Exhibited as a guest residency during GlitchKraft at Emerson Contemporary at Emerson College (Boston, MA) in September of 2019.
